Local Volunteer Firefighter Wins Sky Tower Stair Challenge

Local Volunteer Firefighter Wins Sky Tower Stair Challenge Date Posted: Jun 1, 2018

The Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge is an annual fundraiser for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). Each year firefighters from around New Zealand and international competitors from Australia, the US, Chile and Germany fundraise and compete in this amazing event at Auckland’s Sky Tower.

The Sky Tower is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere with 51 flights of stairs, 1103 individual steps.  Firefighters wear up to 25kg of kit and there was approximately 950 firefighters participating.  This year is their 14th anniversary and without the support, generous cooperation and provision of the venue by SKYCITY and Auckland Airport this event would not happen.

There were three local volunteers participating this year with Joe Lepper from Rarangi Volunteer Rural Fire Force achieving 1st place in the "Donned - Male Overall" race.  Andy Luffman and Scott Henry, also from Rarangi Volunteer Rural Fire Force, were well placed in their categories.  Andy achieved 53rd place out of 166 in the Grand Masters category with a time of 18mins 15seconds and Scott achieved 16th place out of 60 in the Firefighter of Steel Masters category with a time of 17mins 19seconds.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all three on their commitment and determination to partake in this event to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.  To date they raised $7297.80 which will go towards helping the six kiwis diagnosed with a blood cancer every day.

If you would like to donate to this very worthy cause  :
