On 2 August 2018 two of our local specialist incident management team - Chris Hayles, Aircraft role and Phil Hodson, Division Superviser - were deployed to California to assist with fire suppression for one of the worst wildfires of America.
There's a team of about 40 deployed from New Zealand who will join forces with an Australian contingent. This deployment would be for approximately six weeks.
The states biggest fire, named the Carr Fire, has ripped through 110,154 acres of California in the past week.
Canadian Deployment 2018
Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire District would like to recognise the team from Blenheim Volunteer Rural Fire Force being deployed to help fight vegetation fires in Canada.
The team join crews from Australia who will be helping their Canadian colleagues with suppression of the very large fires throughout Canada.
Most of the team left today (6 August) and the rest tomorrow heading straight for Vancouver where they will be briefed and sent to the various zones where the fires are out of control.
The photo below was taken at Marlborough Airport. They are; Back row left to right - Steve Smith, Mark Hodges, Richie Law (Controller of Blenheim VRFF who was there to see his crew off), Peter Selby. Front row – Rob Horsenail and his two children; Charlie and Olivia.
We wish them all the best for this tough but important work and look forward to their safe return home in approximately six weeks.
