Rarangi/Blenheim Rural team complete Sky Tower Challenge Date Posted: Jun 5, 2019

The Rarangi/Blenheim Sky Tower team would like to thank everyone who donated and assisted with their 2019 Leukaemia & Blood Cancer fundraising events.  After another hard year of constant training and campaigning they returned for their third challenge at the Sky Tower in May this year.  They were joined by another 1,050 firefighter competitors from a wide mix of Stations and backgrounds.  This year it was the 15th anniversary of the Firefighters Challenge and it was an honour to be competing.

The Sky Tower is 328 metres tall as measured from ground level, making it the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere.  To complete the Firefighters Challenge, they actually start 4 floors down in the basement and then climb to the 51st floor for the main categories or to the 60th floor for the newer Steel class category.

Most importantly, this year they raised $8,621 for the charity. The combined efforts for Marlborough came to almost $50k - thanks to the Blenheim, Seddon and Renwick Urban crew’s awesome efforts.

The team consisted of five members this year – four crew members from Rarangi and a crew member from Blenheim Rural.  Next year they would like to be joined by more - strength in numbers!  Everyone did very well and were pleased with their results on the day.

Team results were as follows:

Steve Smith - Donned category in 14 minutes, 56 seconds.

Janelle White - Donned category in 19 minutes 58 seconds.

Gary Graham - Donned category in 15 minutes and 44 seconds.

Andy Luffman - Donned category in 15 minutes and 28 seconds.

Scottie Henry - Firefighter of Steel category in 17 minutes and 35 seconds.

We are already planning and training for the 2020 event, please contact any of the team members if you are interested in competing with us.
