MKRFA Current Fire Training Calendar.... Date Posted: Oct 1, 2015

The updated training schedule for the MKRFA is out to the end of the calendar year. Of special note are the following courses:

District Wajax Competitions - 10th Oct at Pine Valley Camp North Bank:

Get your pump crews lined up now and come and enjoy this fun day out. We will be putting on a BBQ and some refreshments along with spot prizes. We will also be running the mixed team events for all crews. This is not an out and out competition event but it is a chance for crews to get together before the fire season and try out their rural fire fighting skills.

4WD Heavy Vehicle Workshop - 17th Oct at Canvastown

Now that Marfs and the crew at Canvasstown have got their new 4WD 3,500L tanker, thanks to Nelson Forests Ltd, the MKRFA will be running another one of its heavy vehicle 4WD workshops in the Wakamarina area.  The is workshop is almost full to capacity now but if other want to be involved, just give the MKRFA Team a call.  Mark Hodges, our fully MITO accredited heavy vehicle driving instructor will once again be lead instructor on this course

US14556 Use of the Fire Weather Index System - 7th-8th Nov at the EOC 4 Wither Road Blenheim

This course will be run by Tony Teeling, one of NZ's best wildfire behaviourists who also holds Canada's top Fire Behaviour accreditation. It accredits people with the knowledge to understand and use NZ's Fire Weather Index system and follows on from the Fire Environment course that all Crew Leader candidates have to undertake.  It is the first step in understanding Fire Science and the role it plays in monitoring our Fire Environment across the district and New Zealand.

Forestry Fire Exercise - NFL Ditchlings Forest Wairau Valley 14th Nov

In conjunction with Nelson Forests Ltd, The MKRFA will again be running a forest fire exercise prior to the fire season proper.  It will be run along the same lines as previous forestry exercises and will involve route finding, forestry communication protocols, working with and around heavy transport and machinery and of course fire outbreak.

Our thanks go to Nelson Forests Ltd and Denis Parsons for hosting this important training event.  The training is open to all crews; Rural, Urban, DOC and Forestry crews who may have to respond to a forest fire emergency.

The objective will be to have our fire crews understand safe practices / protocols etc. when entering and working in a working commercial forest environment generally  foreign to them.  Topics and scenarios we will cover are:

  • Radio procedure, simplex channels, call points.
  • Alternative safe exits from forest.
  • Working around active harvesting sites (hauler)
  • Working around heavy machinery.
  • Water points, need for good access.
  • Road and water point signage.
  • Forestry Operations Fire danger Codes.

We will meet at the Marlborough EOC, 4 Wither Road Blenheim at 08:00 for a brief before heading to the forest access point at the start of Black Road on SH63 at 0900hrs.  There we will meet with forest managers before deploying onto the forest site.  MKRFA will be providing the Comms/Command unit and apart from NFL 03 and 04 attendees will be only using fire response vehicles.  We are also working with NZFS to bring across the Command Unit based out of Nelson, if it is available on the day.

The day will conclude at approx. 1400hrs with a debrief and a BBQ for all.

US14554 Defensive Control of Structure Fires - 21st Nov at Woodburne Strucutre Fire Fighting Facility

The MKRFA along with Woodbourne Airbase has built a fit-for-purpose defensive control of structure fires facilitiy to host these courses.  Two previous courses have been run on this site to good effect and we plan to run another session for crews who want/need this specialist training.

Once again, we are running a full programme of training and accreditation in rural fire unit standards and practical workshops, so get involved and talk to your Fire Force Controller or contact us here at the MKRFA.

Cheers,

The MKRFA Team
