Firemanship - Direct Attack on Wildfires

Recent fires in Canterbury and earlier in the year in South Australia, have thrown up important lessons in firemanship. Direct attack on a wildfire, if it is to be done with a reasonable margin of safety needs to be conducted from a safe anchor point – somewhere where there is no risk of a fire either getting in behind fire fighters or impacting them full on. MKRFA Taskforce Deployment Hanmer Fire March 2016

The MKRFA deployed a 2-crew taskforce to the Hanmer - Canterbury fire in March. Led by Phil "Hoddy" Hodson and made up of personnel from Dept of Conservation Kaikoura staff and Blenheim, Goose Bay, Kaikoura and Koromiko VRFF's, the taskforce did an outstanding job putting in line around this gnarly 60Ha fire. Hardwork and handtools were the orders for the three days and the taskforce responded. Check out the full story here.

New Training Model For Rural Fire

The new 2016 Rural Fire Training Model document has been developed by the National Rural Fire Authority (NRFA) / New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) and describes the operating model agreed for rural training in 2016 following significant changes in 2015 to the rural training and funding environment. You are invited to attend the annual challenge in whatever capacity you feel would be beneficial. For RFAs there is space for teams to participate.
